Shantit Kranti - Web series (Review)
Last night, I binged on Shantit Kranti (SONY LIV – Marathi web series) which unabashedly is a take-off on Dil Chahata Hai (DCH) and almost a tribute to the iconic movie of 2001.
Before I continue : YZen Rating : 4.5* Stars (not
sure why I cut that 0.5*)
Yzen says : This is a MUST MUST MUST watch for any guy who understands a bit of Marathi. This
6 episode series, is too rollickingly funny. Miss it & you have missed a huge-huge
chance of complete set of funnies; that will have you burst out in laughter,
spill your drink, smack the pillow. It’s insane. Have not watched this
kind of comedy in a long long time ! Well timed & superbly executed
punchlines & insults, fly thick and fast between the chaddi buddies.
Very much like the 3 buddies from DCH, Sameer,
Akash & Siddharth; our 3 protagonists Shreyas (Abhay Mahajan), Dinar (Alok
Rajwade), Prasanna (Lalit Prabhakar) plan a road trip to Goa. These characters
are so wonderfully sketched that they are as common as any group of school
friends. All 3 of them have some problems of their own & they are oscillating
between the casual approach of the youth and the responsibilities of adulthood.
What better than a road trip to Goa, which promises to be unadulterated fun.
lots of booze & beaches. (esp a plan that’s made over a heavy drinking session)
However, instead of Goa, our trio ends up at a
meditation retreat Shanitvan in Lonavala. What follows later, is their journey towards
self-realization. Ofcourse, the story line is quite predictable but it is the
treatment that the script gets, makes it so very special. Though, DCH remains
the underlying theme of the series & then gravitates towards a more mature
friends, trip out - ZNMD (Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara), Shantit Kranti
deviates and creates a separate niche for itself.
Through-out the 6 episodes, the references &
dialogues from DCH, are freely used and Dinar, Shreya & Prashya. even like
to think of themselves as Aamir Khan rather than Akshay Khanna. The strong bond
of friendship and the chemistry, that the director has been able to bring on to
the screen is amazing. The 3 of them between themselves through comical
punchlines or just some gestures, have you in splits. The everyday jokes that
we have with our friends have been bought out is amazing. They are a class
apart in terms of acting & comic timing and are ably complemented by the
support cast in their limited roles. Even a 5 min cameo by their friend Alok,
is outstanding.
YZen says : A binge watch is a must for folks who understand
Marathi, esp for Boyz Gang. I am not sure if sub-titles can do justice to the
comic element. (for non-Marathi viewers). Try 1 episode nonetheless.
Trivia : Shantit Kranti is the latest web series from
the Marathi YouTube channel Bharatiya Digital Party. Founded by Sarang
Sathaye, Paula McGlynn and Anusha Nandakumar, the channel known to its fans as BhaDiPa
rolls out comic sketches that hilariously send up Marathi manners.
