Tiger Zinda Hai - movie review

Tiger Zinda Hai
Movie review

I approached this movie with a lot of scepticism as last couple of Sallu movies were not to the standards of what one can expect from a heart core Salman fan. While, Tubelight was hopeless, Bhajranji bhai did tug a few heart strings but did not have the mass appeal of Dabaang !
So Tiger is back .. and that's what is fantastic for the core Sallu fans !! Here is what we get from what we expect .. Be it Ready or Wanted or Bodyguard ..... Salman bhai is back in action and how. Can't call the above 2 movies (Bajrangi and Tubelight ) as flops as they too did cross the 300 crore mark eventually and so will this movie too over this weekend.

The movie is based in Middle East ... North East of Syria in particular. Rogue groups are called as ICS but clear references can be made to ISIS. Initial locations are of the snow clad mountains of some alps in Austria and with the wolves and a sledge ride make an awesome viewing. This is the introduction of Tiger back in action. The rest of the movie is filmed in the deserts of Ikrit which would be somewhere between Iraq and Syria or so it's given to believed. Scenically, it's a viewing experience. Right from the the snowy alps of Austria, right down to the dusty by-lanes of Syria, the panoramic delight is eye catching.

The story starts on a slow note but picks up quick space especially in the 2nd half. Admittedly, it's a long movie (about 3 hours including the intermission) so the 1st half tends to drag a bit. Anupriya (Poorna) as the lead nurse gets a big screen presence at this time. Unfortunately, she does not grab her chance and does not  make any impact on the film apart from the script thrusthed on her.

Unlike the previous films, this movie though is all about Salman Khan, my favourite Katrina gets a lot of action and screen time too, instead of being just a arm candy. She can actually be likened to Catherine Zeta Jones in a Zorro or Entrapment.
Sajjad as Abu Usman comes as a credible villain only because of the getup but lacks substance to deliver the promise. His rhetoric however on why he is doing the terrorist activities do rhyme a bell on US policies over the past couple of decades. On similar counts, Katrina's dialogue on how Pakistan too is suffering from terrorist activities and how they need to be looked as a peace loving nation, hit an emotional chord. Girish Karnad  (Shenoy) .. with some sort of juvenile medical breathing device looks completely out of sorts. Paresh Rawal (Firdous) for his out of logic English is as  always outstanding ... sense of comic and sense of timing is amazing as always. The story by Neelash and Co ... leaves a lot to be determined.   The entire plot and even the rescue attempt has no iota of any sensible logic but apna Sallu bhai story mein sab chalta hai.

Luckily, there were just 2 songs in the movie, which did not obstruct the flow of the narrative. The flow was good and fast and kept the audience engrossed.

The action oscillates between sublime to ridiculous and  was too much take for a Hindi film but when I can digest a Rambo, Arnold and Die Hard series films, surely I can take this one too.
The best I liked is that even the most popular song ... SWAG ... is after the movie is completely over ... and even then the entire audience does not leave the theatre .

Leaves room for Tiger 3

Must watch for a Sallu fan ..
