Ittefaq movie review
Inspired by a 1969 movie by the same name, this murder thriller promises a lot and delivers too on a lot of fronts. It however leaves the audiences wanting a bit more and a lot better ending.
Ittefaq would be one of the best performances from Akshay Khanna, who plays the role of a lead police officer. The story moves on 2 lines in parallel. It is intricately weaved in between the the main protagonist Siddharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha. It's a double murder mystery and the film smoothly moves along with both lead actors telling their part of the story. The back and forth version of the two sides of the same story is very well depicted. Siddharth looks comfortable in his role but I wish they had taken someone else than Sonakshi who looks completely out of place and lacks the substance for this role.
The film starts abruptly and it takes you quite a while to figure out the sequence of events. I will not call it 'at the edge of your seat' excitement but it does keep you fairly gripped, for most part. Akshay Kumar's pronouncements as if they are some divine oracles look smart and give a good backdrop to the movie. There is no fuss or melodrama and more importantly no songs. The movie moves along at a frantic pace, so much so that for the first time, I was back before the interval was over, so as not to miss a single scene. Catching up with what you have missed would have been difficult. There are only 3 characters in the film and the other fringe characters hardly get any screen time. The visuals are not that great as most of it is shot indoors.
Just like the start, the ending too is very abrupt and for a large part, confusing. My basic issue with the story is that the motive behind the murder and hence what the entire story is based on; is very flimsy. Infact, it actually is not even depicted clearly and in a way hurriedly closed without giving it any importance. The movie could have done with a much better and intelligent handling. A police office running across the airport terminal and reaching the boarding counter to stop a flight, insults my intelligence. The last 10 mins wastes the energy of the entire movie.
All in all ... worth one watch but not for Salman or SRK fans
